Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah - is an American actor, rapper and a singer. The role of Queen Latifah on television, film and in music has earned her several prizes. They include a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award In addition, she has six Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, New Jersey. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah refers to an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and kind". Her cousin gave it to her in the age of eight. Always a tall girl her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a power forward for the basketball team at her high school. She sang the song"Home" from the show The Wiz in a high school play. Latifah was a member of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her beatboxing career. Latifah was part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an audition recording of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. The single caught the eye from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and, in 1988, released her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
